It happens more than you would think. Someone cuts a corner too tight, a driver loses control on an icy morning, or a delivery truck clips your post on the way out of the neighborhood. You walk outside and your mailbox is on the ground. Here is exactly what to do.

Step 1: Document Everything Before You Touch It

Take photos from multiple angles before moving anything. If the vehicle that hit it left debris, a piece of bumper, a side mirror, or paint transfer on the post, photograph that too. This documentation matters if you are filing an insurance claim or if the driver is identified.

Step 2: Check for a Note or Witness

In many cases the driver stops and leaves contact information. Check your mailbox area, your door, and ask any neighbors who might have seen it happen. If you have a doorbell camera or security system, pull the footage immediately before it loops.

Step 3: File a Police Report If the Driver Left

If someone hit your mailbox and left without leaving information, you can file a hit-and-run report with your local police department. You will need this report number for your insurance claim.

Step 4: Notify USPS

Your mail carrier needs to know your mailbox is down so they can hold your mail rather than leaving it on the ground. Call your local post office or submit a mail hold at usps.com until the box is repaired or replaced.

Step 5: Check Your Homeowner's Insurance

Many homeowner's insurance policies cover mailbox damage under the other structures portion of the policy, often with no deductible or a very low one. Call your agent and ask before paying out of pocket. If the driver who hit it is identified and insured, their liability coverage should cover the repair.
